This Weekend’s Senior Rugby

Saturday 26th January

  • 1XV v Aspull, AWAY, KO 2:15pm
  • Eccles Form: WWWWWWW  (P12 W10 Pts49)
  • Aspull Form: WWWWWWW (P13 W13 Pts63)
  • Pre-match Notes:  Aspull are undefeated so far this season and survived a late bombardment to hold on for a 12-19 win at Gorton Street in October.  Eccles will be looking to reverse the result at Woodshaw Park and bring home the Win to keep them in contention at the top of the table.
  • Table  Lancs/Cheshire Div 2
  • 1XV RESULT: FT 31-20 Loss
  • Tries: Jack Robbins 1, Adam Christey 1, Gav Ackers-Johnson 1
  • 1 Conversion/ 1 Penalty: Chris Fortune
  • Report: A disappointing result in miserable weather for Eccles 1XV who begin very well with 2 tries, but slowly loose their grip on the game as Aspull fight back with 3 unanswered tries to go ahead 21-10 by half time.  Knock-ons are a feature of the game with muddy conditions and heavy rain. An early second half try from GavA-J, a successful Penalty from Chris Fortune and a yellow card for Aspull provide hope, but the home team maintain their advantage to take the win. Match official’s decisions provide plenty of talking points along the touchline.   https://vimeo.com/313557270

  • Sunday 20th January
  • U18 SENIOR COLTS  v Bury, AWAY, KO 2pm
  • Eccles Form: WLWWWWLWW
  • Bury Form: LWLLLLLL
  • Pre-match Notes: In 2nd place with a healthy points difference, it’s possible the Colts can win their Conference Division if they win all 3 of their remaining League games. Lancashire U17 trials on the same date provide an unhelpful distraction for the squad. In the last meeting between the teams, Eccles Colts won 52-12.
  • Table
  • Colts RESULT: 5-60
  • 10 Tries: Brad (07′) Shea (11′, 69′) Dan Aspinall (18′) Cameron Smollett (22′) Alex Speakman (28′) Josh Stafford (40′, 46′) Kieron Reed (44′) Matt Walker (60′)
  • 5 Conversions: Alex Speakman
  • Report: Cold and windy. Great performance from every player. The colts began with great attacking determination and speed from the start. The opening try was a result of several phases from the forwards inside the Bury 22 with the ball moving across the entire back line , form left to right, to be placed in the corner by winger Brad Palmer. The traffic was all one way in the first half with Eccles going on to score 4 more unanswered tries, featuring impressive individual skill and evasive running from the backs, and thunderous cavalry support from the forwards. Eccles maintained their momentum and hunger in the 2nd half with 5 more tries.  Bury’s persistence earned themselves a deserved try at 50 minutes – their determination to keep going does their players and coach great credit. This League victory moves the Eccles colts a step closer to their goal of winning their Conference Division. 2 games remaining, 2 points behind Clitheroe Senior Colts, who were awarded another ‘Walker Over’ today (their 4th since November) to keep them top.
  • Next Sunday Eccles will face Bury again in the U18 Lancashire Trophy Quarter Final.
