This Weekend’s Rugby

Good luck to everyone pulling on the Navy n’ White hoops this weekend. We’re now at the business end of the season and your support on the touchlines will be much appreciated by the players. The clubhouse will screen LIVE 6 Nations Rugby  (England v Italy KO 16.45) but the big match on Saturday is not at Twickenham! …

Saturday 9th March

  • 1XV v ORRELL 1XV, AWAY
  • 1XV Form: WWWLLWWWWWWWLWWWL
  • Notes: One look at the table tells you everything you need to know about this fixture. With only four League games remaining and both teams tied on 63 points, the winner of this fixture could well seize the 2nd place finish needed to guarantee promotion. Orrell, similar to Eccles, are in good form with six consecutive wins since their defeat at Aspull. In the last meeting in November, Eccles took a 31-15 victory at Gorton Street and Orrell will no doubt be looking to reverse that result.
  • KO 2.30pm
  • Venue: St John Rigby College, Gathurst Road, Orrell, WN5 0LJ
  • Table  Lancs/Cheshire Div 2
  • RESULT:  5-0 L
  • Tries: –
  • Conversions: –
  • Report: In blustery conditions Eccles spent the first 10 minutes inside Orrell’s half with the two packs battling to secure the ball. The opening score came at 32 minutes from several phases of Orrell forward play, with the Eccles defence unable to stop the lunge for the line, following a 10m line-out. The second half brought more attacking from Eccles and more determined defence from Orrell. Eccles applied plenty of pressure, and had the majority of possession, but couldn’t find a way through. Orrell battled to the end to keep Eccles scoreless and claim victory by a narrow 5-0 margin, retaining 2nd place in the league table. Eccles slip to 3rd.
  • 2XV v CROSBY ST MARYS 1XV, HOME
  • 2XV Form: WDWWWWLLLWWWWWWLLWWL
  • Notes: The recent resurgence of the 2XVs has placed them in 2nd, with a realistic chance of promotion if they win all their remaining five league games (the final fixture in April, being the local derby away at De La Salle) The Eccles 2XVs will be looking for an improved performance to reverse the 22-7 defeat away at Crosby in November.
  • KO 3pm
  • Table SaleSharksDiv3North
  • RESULT:  7-15 L
  • Tries: Pete Heseltine 1
  • Conversions: Reece James 1
  • Report: Crosby’s three unconverted tries send the 2XV to 3rd in their table, De La Salle 2XV move up into 2nd without playing (benefitting from a Home Walk Over).
  • 3XV v HUDDERSFIELD YMCA 3XV, HOME
  • KO 3pm
  • RESULT:  5-45 L
  • Tries: Joe Rapinett 1
  • Conversions: –
  • Report: The recently formed 3s suffer a heavy home defeat in a game played in a good spirit. On a positive note U18 colt Joe Rapinett scored his first Senior Try.
Our thanks to Huddersfield YMCA RUFC who made the trip over the Pennies to provide opposition at short notice.
