This Weekend’s Rugby

Good luck to everyone pulling on the Navy n’ White hoops this weekend. No 1XV or 3XV fixtures unfortunately, but two Semi Finals to look forward to with the 2XV v De La Salle on Saturday (now at home) and the Colts v Ormskirk at home on Sunday. Your support on the touchlines will be much appreciated by the players. Following the 2XV Semi Final (KO3pm) the clubhouse will screen the Calcutta Cup 6 Nations game England v Scotland LIVE (KO 5pm).

Saturday 16th March

  • Robinsons Brewery Bowl Semi Final
  • KO 3pm
  • Venue: NOW at Eccles RFC, Gorton Street. (Switched from De La Salle, Lancaster Road due to winds blowing the posts over, switched again from Broughton RUFC due to waterlogged pitch)
  • Notes: Eccles 2s and De La Salle 2s are closely positioned 2nd and 3rd in the SaleSharksDiv3North and Eccles will need to be at their best if they are to progress to the final. Eccles enjoyed a 37-10 victory when they last faced DLS on the opening day of the season back in August and will return to Lancaster Road for their final league fixture on 13th April, which could well determine promotion.

  • Tries:
  • Conversions:
  • Report: Eccles dominate early possession and territory and eventually break the deadlock, at 25 mins, with Pete Heseltine intercepting the ball, offloading to Will Parkinson who scored to the left of the posts and coverts his try.  7-0. At 36 mins the Referee abandoned game following a breakdown in discipline.

  • Report: (Table) With their league title secured with a 17-18 away victory at Clitheroe, the Senior Colts turned their attention to the county cup competition on Sunday afternoon, when they faced Ormskirk in the Lancashire U18 Trophy Semi Final. Eccles had beaten their opponents home and away this season but were well aware that they would need to be focussed and committed to progress to the final. At Kick off the showers subsided but the blustery wind continued. What followed was an enthralling contest.  At 2 minutes Eccles began on the front foot wining a penalty just outside the 22 (failing to release the ball) to take an early lead from the cool boot of Alex Speakman [3-0].Ormskirk responded at 10 minutes, adopting a tactic of quick penalties, causing chaos in the scrambling Eccles defence who were penalised for not retreating, leading to an try [3-7].  This established a pattern of end-to-end play for the first half, where Eccles’ erratic passing would waste possession in attack, and their lack of alertness in defence would invite the visitors to respond to each home score.At 17 mins, Eccles score a try (Shea) from a line out, with pace and power breaking through under the sticks [10-7]. 5 mins later Ormskirk score a try [10-12]. 5 mins later Eccles score a second try (Shea) with a switch from a 10m scrum to score in the left corner, with the conversion narrowly missed sailing over the post [15-12]. At 34 mins Eccles score again (Brad) from chip kick from Josh Stafford to the left corner where the Eccles winger collects without breaking stride to finish in the corner, a terrific try followed by a magnificent conversion kick in the wind [22-12]. Could the colts defend this margin for 1 minute until Half Time? Nope. With the last play before the break Eccles again fail to adapt to the Ormskirk quick penalty tactic and the visitors score a try to the side of the sticks [HT 22-17]. Eccles began the second half with a period of attacking possession. At 45 min, following an attack down the right wing with Joe Rap and Rory combining, Shea drives over the line for his third Try to give Eccles a 10-point cushion, which they held onto for the next 20 mins [27-17]. As the game enters the final stages, Ormskirk put a tenacious Eccles defence under sustained pressure for a good 10 minutes inside their 22, eventually breaking through to score in the right corner to set up an exciting conclusion to the contest [27-22]. At 68 mins, a poor restart from Eccles, combined with fatigue and a catalogue of defensive fumbles gifts a loose ball to Ormskirk 10m from the goal line, who pounce on the opportunity to score and seize the lead in dramatic circumstances [27-29]! Eccles re-group to put Ormskirk under pressure from the restart and win a penalty with 1 minute on the clock. Alex Speakman stepped up and slots home a 35m penalty to claim back a hard fought victory in a very close match [30-29]. Commiserations to Ormskirk who battled to the end. Appreciation to the referee who field marshalled the competitive contest with an even hand and full credit to the captains of both teams who kept discipline in a full-bloodied semi final played in great spirit. A terrific advert for colts rugby. Thanks to all who braved the elements to support on the touchline.
