  • REPORT: Eccles 1s got back on track with their 52-12 win against Oswestry and set out to Marple yesterday looking to follow up that performance with another bonus-point victory in the Cheshire sunshine. Eccles had earned a 30-5 win at Gorton Street when the sides last met in December and were hopeful of a positive result, beginning the day in 3rd place, 3 points behind Orrell, and knowing promotion was still a possibility. Marple however began the game with more desire and enjoyed plenty of possession and territory in the opening quarter of an hour but couldn’t finish off their chances. Scrum-Half Sam Long injured his hand (broken) and was replaced by U18 Colt Matt Walker. Eccles defended resolutely, soaked up the pressure and at 16 minutes Will Parkinson broke out on the left wing, and sped/stumbled/swerved up field to score the opening try with the first Eccles attack of the game [0-7]. Eccles continued to make hard work of it. It would be 20 minutes of grind before Eccles managed to create another opportunity this time on the right flank, with Freddie Oakey breaking on the wing, to offload inside to Fullback Cammy Oates who released Centre Martin Thompson to tear through the defence, step inside to evade a final tackle, and score under the posts for an easy conversion [0-14]. With minutes remaining before the break Lee Morris closed down the Marple fullback, to create havoc and chaos and Eccles ended the half in front of the home team posts. Following words at half-time, Eccles began the second period fired-up. Within 2 minutes of the restart the Oates-Oakey combination released Freddie up the right wing, who backed himself on the outside to finish in the corner for Eccles’ 3rd Try [0-19]. Minutes later Flanker Lee Brennand broke through the defensive line targeting the same area of the pitch, James Wright continued the momentum into the centre field and a quick combination of Oates-Morris passes released Will Parky to finish in the left corner for Eccles 4th Try [0-24]. Eccles continued to dominate the game but were unable to convert their attacking pressure into points with the match official winning no fans amongst the visiting supporters for a sequence of three “forward-pass” decisions to deny further Eccles tries for Oakey and O’Regan. Play moved upfield, encouraged by the referee’s whistle, away from the groans of Eccles touchline supporters and at 73 minutes, at the other end, Marple were awarded a penalty try after Eccles conceeded several penalties in remarkable sequence of decisions. In response, Freddie raced away with the ball to attempt an audacious solo restart kick but his opportunist second phantom try was thwarted by Law 12 (opposition must be behind the 10-metre line). FT 7-24. Eccles take the win and move above Orrell (who were defeated by Aspull yesterday) into 2nd place. Eccles can secure promotion next week with a win against Garstang at Gorton Street.

  • Report: Eccles 2s recorded an impressive 0-65 away victory when they last met Broughton in November but there was little sign of a repeat of that scoreline today. Broughton turned up with former Eccles 2XV captain Stuart Cork making his debut for Broughton against his former team mates. The visitors began on the front foot and scored first. Eccles responded scoring 3 tries to lead 17-5, but two penalties allowed Broughton back into the game before the break [HT 17-11]. Broughton started the second half quickly with a try from the restart and continued their domination to score four more, giving them a 25 point lead. Eccles battled away and scored a late 4th try, but it was too little too late. [FT 24-42] After a great start to the season and good form through the winter, results this spring have been disappointing. The 2s appear to have run out of steam since the abandoned Semi Final vs De La Salle. It’s not how you start it’s how you finish that counts, and the lack of a win in March has seen the 2s slide down the table from potential promotion to 5th. Not many highlights to speak of today, other than a decent first half performance, four tries, and a Senior debut for U18 Colt Alex Speakman.
